2. The first 3D printed object was a bust of author Isaac Asimov

It was created by Chuck Hull in 1983, and it took him over 10 hours to print this bust!

3. The first 3D printed gun was created in 2013 by a group of American researchers who called themselves Defense Distributed - they uploaded the blueprints for this gun online so anyone could download them and print their own weapons at home! 



4. 3D printing is used for more than just making models and prototypes

It can also be used to make real, usable products! A good example of this is the world's first 3D printed car called Strati . It was made in 2014 by a company called Local Motors, which specialises in using 3D printing to create cars. 


5. The most expensive 3D printed object ever made cost £182,000 to print

It was created by Michael Hansmeyer and Benjamin Dillenburger from the Institute for Computational Design at ETH Zurich , and it took them 100 hours to print! The object is made up of 1 million triangles which are then connected together with a special adhesive. It's called 'Contour Crafting' and you can see it in action below:


6. In 2013 a man named Greg Holloway set up a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of an affordable desktop 3D printer costing only £200 - he raised over £2 million!


7. The first 3D printed gun was made in 2013 by a man named Cody Wilson

He created it using a 3D printer called the 'Mark 1' which was created by another American man named Stratasys. It's made of ABS plastic and fires .380 calibre bullets, although it can also fire some types of shotgun cartridges. 


8. The largest 3D printed object ever is a replica of the Space Needle in Seattle, US

It's called Space Needle and was created as part of an art project by a company called Made in Space . It was printed with plastic on board the International Space Station! 


9. The world's first 3D printed car won't be available to buy until 2019!

It's being made by Local Motors and they plan to sell them for around £33,000 each! They've already been given permission to test drive their cars on public roads in Nevada, USA - watch one below:


10. The world's first 3D printed human skin was created in 2014

It was called Skin-B and was created by a company called Organovo. It's made of living cells and is designed to help test cosmetics, drugs and vaccines before they are released onto the market!
