The town of Paignton is located in the county of Devon in southwest England. It is a popular seaside resort town with a variety of holiday accommodation, complemented by numerous pubs, nightclubs and restaurants. Tourist attractions include Paignton Zoo and the Dartmouth Steam Railway, which operates steam trains from Paignton to Kingswear, from where a ferry can be taken across the River Dart to Dartmouth.


The town's name is derived from Anglo-Saxon words meaning "farmstead on the River Paignton". The original settlement was located on the hill above the modern town, at what is now called Paignton Park.


The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Paignton Zoo is built on the site of a Bronze Age settlement. The Romans also had a presence in the area, and there are a number of Roman coins that have been found in the town.


Paignton became a town in 1837, and was given its charter by Queen Victoria. The town's growth was spurred by the coming of the railways in the 19th century. Paignton railway station was opened in 1847, and the Dartmouth Steam Railway in 1859.


The town's popularity as a seaside resort grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Large numbers of visitors came to enjoy the town's sandy beaches, mild climate and scenic beauty.
